Honoring a Clients’ Love for Food and Green Space
– Italian Style!
In June of 2006 our company designed and built a screen room for clients in Minnetonka. They called us back last spring when beginning a major landscaping project and asked if we would design a trellis-covered patio among their newly planned gardens – one that would compliment the design of the screen room we built three years earlier. Simple enough we thought … Until they told us that the patio MUST include a wood-burning pizza oven. We were excited and, in truth, a bit daunted by the challenge. But we did our “homework” and feel proud of the results – a gorgeous outdoor entertainment area – Italian style! The patio was dug 24” below the existing grade. The resulting soil was piled around the backside of the trellis to 18” above grade. Facing opposite the trellis, 3’ and 4’ boulders were placed around the oven to create areas for plantings (including pizza herbs) and to complete the enclosure. The patio floor was covered with 3/8” chipped granite to provide a level surface and allow for drainage without hardscaping. The entire construction of the “pizza patio” is the ultimate in low maintenance. The only item not constructed of stone, brick, or stucco is the trellis – which was built from Azek® and coated with a paint meant specifically for this maintenance-free, plastic, exterior trim. And the pizza – it’s the best we’ve ever tasted … Buon Appetito!
